Addiction Psychologist Specializing in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment

A widely recognized addiction psychologist and published book author, Arnold M. Washton, Ph.D., has specialized in treating substance abuse, other addictive behaviors, and related mental health problems since 1975.  A native New Yorker born and raised in The Bronx, Dr. Washton subsequently earned degrees in psychology from New York University (B.A., 1968) and  The Graduate School of The City University of New York (Ph.D., 1978), and completed post-doctoral certification training at The Westchester Center for the Study of Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis (1984).

In the course of his extensive career in the addiction field, Dr. Washton has designed and directed several nationally-known addiction research and treatment programs. He served as substance abuse consultant to professional sports teams, foreign governments, media organizations, multinational corporations; the U.S Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. State Department, and subcommittees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.  He also served as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine in the Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse and as principal investigator of research grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and major pharmaceutical companies.

Dr. Washton has devoted his entire career to developing flexible, respectful, individually-tailored approaches to treating addiction. His Integrative Treatment Approach was cited by the National Institute on Drug Abuse as “one of the best known and most widely respected treatment programs in the United States”.  As described in his most recent book “Treating Alcohol and Drug Problems in Psychotherapy Practice: Doing What Works”, this approach combines many of the best clinical practices and research-supported treatment strategies in the addiction field today.

Dr. Washton holds licenses to practice psychology in both New York (No. 006178) and New Jersey (No. 35S100357400) and National Proficiency Certification in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Abuse from the American Psychological Association, College of Professional Psychology.

He has authored numerous books and articles on substance abuse and its treatment.
